Congratulations to the recipients of the Emotional Well-Being and Physical Health summer short course! The Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Research Department of Behavioural Science and Health at University College London (UCL) are hosting their second annual summer short course exploring the linkages between emotional well-being and physical health outcomes July 11-15, 2022. Dr. Kourtney James
Dr. Kortney James is a PhD prepared nurse and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She earned her PhD in Nursing from Georgia State University. Dr. James is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the National Clinician Scholars Program at the University of California, Los Angeles. During this Fellowship, Dr. James will continue to focus on the physical health and emotional well-being of Black postpartum women by assessing the ways that clinical practice and policy change can address perinatal mental health disparities and fulfill their needs, while also considering the influence structural racism and culture have on their health and help-seeking behaviors.
Dr. Erica Diminich
Dr. Erica D. Diminich is a 2019 National Institute on Aging (NIA) Butler Williams Scholar and NIA Alzheimer’s disease Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (AD-
RCMAR), Research Scientist. Her work examines how chronic and daily stressors intersect with emotional responding, biological, social, cultural, and contextual factors influencing health and aging among diverse Latino populations. Current longitudinal work, funded by the Alzheimer’s Association (AACSF-20-682140, PI: Diminich), examines how emotional reactivity to immigration related stressors (premigration trauma, discrimination) are associated with changes in cardiometabolic health, neuropathological blood-based biomarkers and brain health among community dwelling Foreign-born Latinos at midlife.
Dr. Lucía Macchia
Lucía Macchia is a Lecturer in Psychology at City, University of London, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School. She is a behavioural scientist with an interdisciplinary background and an interest in happiness, physical pain, socioeconomic factors, and public policy. Integrating methods from psychology and behavioural economics, she explores how socioeconomic factors shape emotional well-being and physical pain as well as the link between emotional and physical well-being. To study these topics, she uses large-scale datasets, experiments, and a wide variety of statistical methods.
Dr. Tiffani Bell MD, MPH, FAPA
Diplomate of American Board of Obesity Medicine, Diplomate of American Board of Lifestyle Medicine.
Dr. Tiffani L. Bell Washington is a Quadruple Board Certified Physician who specializes in Adult Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Lifestyle Medicine, and Obesity Medicine. She is a recent graduate of Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Leadership. She is also a 2022 40 under 40 Leader in Health and Nutrition and Obesity Research Center at Harvard Diversity Scholar.
Dr. Bell Washington is passionate about advocacy, research, improving diversity and equity in leadership and decreasing stigma and bias surrounding chronic illnesses such as mental health disorders and obesity. She will focus on the connection between socioeconomic factors, lifestyle changes, and the physical and emotional wellbeing of minority patients which will inform policies that improve health literacy, health outcomes, and access to care. She hopes to increase awareness of the connection between mental and physical wellbeing and empower others.
